Materials
Bernat Softee Baby 5 oz [140 g] 2002 – Pale Blue
Coat, Leggings and Helmet
3 mos 2 balls
6 mos 2 balls

Sizes 3 1/4. mm (U.S. 3), 3 3/4. mm (U.S. 5) and 4 mm (U.S. 6) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge. 6 buttons for Coat. Length of ⅜ inch [1 cm] wide elastic for Leggings.

Gauge
22 sts and 30 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] with 4 mm needles in stocking st.

Instructions
The instructions are written for smaller size. If changes are necessary for larger size, the nstructions will be written thus ( ).

Coat
Right Front: With 4 mm needles, cast on 43 (46) sts and work 5 rows in garter st (knit every row) noting first row is WS.

Proceed in pat as follows:
1st row: (RS). Knit.
2nd row: P6. *K4. P7 (8). Rep from * to last 4 sts. K4.
3rd to 8th rows: Rep 1st and 2nd rows 3 times more.
9th to 14th rows: Knit.
These 14 rows form pat.

Keeping cont of pat, rep last 14 rows 3 times more, dec 1 st at side seam edge (end of row) on 7th, 21st, and 35th rows. 40 (43) sts.

Next row: K15 (16). (K2tog. K1) 5 times. Knit to end of row.
35 (38) sts.

Shape raglan: 1st row: (WS). Cast off 3 sts. Purl to last 15 (16) sts.
K4. P7 (8). K4.
2nd row: Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
3rd row: Purl to last 15 (16) sts. K4. P7 (8). K4.
Rep 2nd and 3rd rows until 20 (21) sts rem, ending with RS facing

for next row.
Shape neck: Next row: Cast off 11 (12) sts. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
**Cont dec 1 st at raglan edge, as before, at the same time, dec 1 st
at neck edge on next 3 rows.
Cont dec at raglan edge only until 2 sts rem. Work 1 row.

Next row: K2tog. Fasten off.
Left Front: With 4 mm needles, cast on 43 (46) sts and work 5 rows in garter st noting first row is WS.

Proceed in pat as follows:
1st row: (RS). Knit.
2nd row: K4. *P7 (8). K4. Rep from * to last 6 sts. P6.
3rd to 8th rows: Rep 1st and 2nd rows 3 times more.
9th to 14th rows: Knit.
These 14 rows form pat.
Keeping cont of pat, rep last 14 rows twice, then 1st to 12th rows once, dec 1 st at side seam edge (beg of row) on 7th, 21st and 35th rows. 40 (43) sts.

Next row: (Buttonhole row). Knit to last 14 (15) sts. yfwd. K2tog. K9 (10). yfwd. K2tog. K1.
Next row: Knit.
Shape raglan: 1st row: (RS). Cast off 3 sts. K3 (6) (including st on needle after cast off ). (K2tog. K1) 5 times. Knit to end of row.
2nd row: K4. P7 (8). K4. Purl to end of row.
3rd row: K1. K2togtbl. Knit to end of row.
Rep 2nd and 3rd rows until 20 (21) sts rem, ending with WS facing for next row, at the same time working 2 more sets of buttonholes (as before) on following 12th (14th) row from previous buttonholes.

Shape Neck: Next row: Cast off 11 (12) sts. Pat to end of row.
Complete as for Right Front working from ** to end.
Back: With 4 mm needles, cast on 71 (76) sts and work 5 rows in garter st noting first row is WS.

Proceed in pat as follows:
1st row: (RS). Knit.
2nd row: P6. *K4. P7 (8). Rep from * to last 10 sts. K4. P6.
3rd to 8th row: Rep 1st and 2nd rows 3 times more.
9th to 14th rows: Knit.

These 14 rows form pat.
Keeping cont of pat, rep last 14 rows 3 times more, dec 1 st at each end of 7th, 21st and 35th rows. 65 (70) sts.
Shape raglans: 1st row: Cast off 3 sts. K15 (18) (including st on needle after cast off ). (K2tog. K1) 9 times. K2tog. Knit to end of row.
2nd row: Cast off 3 sts. Purl to end of row.
3rd row: K1. K2togtbl. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
4th row: Purl.
Rep 3rd and 4th rows until 17 (18) sts rem, ending with a 4th row.
Cast off.
Sleeves: With 4 mm needles, cast on 33 (36) sts and work 5 rows in garter st noting first row is WS.

Proceed in pat as follows:
1st row: (RS). Knit.
2nd row: K2. *P7 (8). K4. Rep from * to last 9 (10) sts. P7 (8). K2.
3rd to 8th rows: Rep 1st and 2nd rows 3 times more.
9th to 14th rows: Knit.
Cont in stocking st, shaping sides by inc 1 st at each end of next and every following 6th (4th) row until there are 41 (48) sts.
Cont even until Sleeve seam measures 5. (6½) ins [14 (16.5) cm], ending with a purl row.
Shape raglan: Cast off 3 sts beg next 2 rows.
1st row: K1. K2togtbl. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
2nd row: Purl.
Rep last 2 rows until 5 (6) sts rem, ending with a 2nd row.

3 Mos Size only: Next row: K1. K3togtbl. K1. 3 sts.
Next row: Purl.
Both Sizes: Cast off.
Collar: With 3. mm needles, cast on 55 (63) sts and work 3 rows in garter st.

Leggings
Right Leg: **With 3. mm needles, cast on 69 (73) sts.
1st row: K2. *P1. K1. Rep from * to last st. K1.
2nd row: K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end.
These 2 rows form rib pat.
3rd row: K2. *yfwd. K2tog. P1. K1. Rep from * to last 3 sts. yfwd.
K2tog. K1.
4th to 8th rows: Work in rib pat.
9th row: Knit.
10th row: Purl.**
11th row: K11 (13). Turn.
12th and alt rows: Purl to end of row.
13th row: K19 (25). Turn.
15th row: K27 (29). Turn.
17th row: K35 (37). Turn.
19th row: Knit to end of row across all sts.
20th row: Purl.
***Cont in stocking st until work from beg measures 7 (8) ins [18 (20.5) cm], measured at the shorter edge, ending with RS facing for next row.
Leg shaping: Cast off 3 sts beg next 2 rows.

Rep last 2 rows until 35 (37) sts rem.
Cont even until Leg measures 6 (7) ins [15 (18) cm] from cast off sts, measured at center, ending with RS facing for next row.***
Divide for foot: 1st row: K28 (30). Turn.
2nd row: K1. P9 (10). K1. Turn.
Work 10 (12) rows in stocking st on these 11 (12) sts. Break yarn.
With RS facing, rejoin yarn to inside edge of 17 (18) sts. Using same needle, pick up and knit 7 (9) sts from side of foot. Knit across 11 (12) sts on needle. Pick up and knit 7 (9) sts from other side of foot.
Knit across rem 7 sts. 49 (55) sts.
Shape foot: 1st row: K3. K2tog. K1 (2). K2tog. K19 (21). K2tog.
K2 (3). K2tog. K16 (18).
2nd row: Knit.
3rd row: K2. K2tog. K1 (2). K2tog. K17 (19). K2tog. K2 (3). K2tog.
K15 (17).
4th row: Knit.
Cast off.
Left Leg: Work from ** to ** as given for Right Leg.
11th row: Knit.
12th row: P11 (13). Turn.
13th and alt rows: Knit.
14th row: P19 (25). Turn.
16th row: P27 (29). Turn.
18th row: P35 (37). Turn.
20th row: Purl across all sts.
Rep from *** to *** as given for Right Leg.

Divide for foot: 1st row: K18 (19). Turn.
2nd row: K1. P9 (10). K1. Turn.
Work 10 (12) rows in stocking st on these 11 (12) sts. Break yarn.
With RS facing, rejoin yarn to inside edge of 7 sts. Using same needle, pick up and knit 7 (9) sts from side of foot. Knit across 11 (12) sts on needle. Pick up and knit 7 (9) sts from other side of foot. Knit across rem 17 (18) sts. 49 (55) sts. Work 13 rows garter st.
Shape foot: 1st row: K16 (18). K2tog. K2 (3). K2tog. K19 (21).
K2tog. K1 (2). K2tog. K3.
2nd row: Knit.
3rd row: K15 (17). K2tog. K2 (3). K2tog. K17 (19). K2tog. K1 (2).
K2tog. K2.
4th row: Knit.
Cast off.
Finishing: Sew front, back and leg seams.
Starting at center of toe decreases, join foot seams, ending at center of heels. Insert elastic through holes at waist.

Helmet
Ear Flap (make 2 alike)
With 3. mm needles, cast on 2 sts.
1st row: (RS). Inc 1 st in first st. K1.
2nd row: Knit.
3rd row: Inc 1 st in each of first 2 sts. K1.
4th row: Knit.
5th row: Inc 1 st in first st. Knit to last 2 sts. Inc 1 st in next st. K1.
Rep last 2 rows, until there are 17 (19) sts, ending with RS facing for next row. Leave sts on a spare needle.

Body of Helmet: With 3. mm needles, cast on 7 (8) sts. Using same needles, knit across 17 (19) sts of first Ear Flap. Cast on 29 (30) sts. Knit across 17 (19) sts of second Ear Flap. Cast on 7 (8) sts. 77 (84) sts. Work 5 rows in garter st (knit every row).
**Next row: Knit.
Next row: K2. *P7 (8). K4. Rep from * to last 9 (10) sts. P7 (8). K2.
Rep last 2 rows 3 times more.
Work 6 rows in garter st.**
Work from ** to ** once more.
Cont even in stocking st until Body of Helmet measures 3. (4) ins [9 (10) cm], ending with WS facing for next row.
Next row: P10 (6). [P2tog. P16 (5)] 3 (10) times. P2tog. P11 (6).
73 sts.
Shape crown: 1st row: (RS). (K7. K2tog) 8 times. K1.
2nd and alt rows: Purl.
3rd row: (K6. K2tog) 8 times. K1.
5th row: (K5. K2tog) 8 times. K1.
Cont in this manner, dec 8 sts every alt row until 17 sts rem.
Break yarn, thread through rem sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely. Sew center back seam.
Finishing: Using 3 strands of yarn, make 2 twisted cords each approx 12 ins [30.5 cm] long. Sew to end of Ear Flaps and trim ends to form tassels.
Twisted Cord: Take 3 strands of yarn, each 30 ins [76 cm] long.
With all 3 strands tog hold one end and with someone holding the other end, twist strands to the right until they begin to curl. Fold the 2 ends tog and tie in a knot so they will not unravel. The strands will now twist themselves tog. Adjust length if desired.
